John Smedley have been producing knitwear in their mill in Matlock, Derbyshire for over 220 years. There are some crucial ingredients that go into producing such a fine quality garment . They start by selecting the best raw materials from around the world. Then they knit and fully fashion each garment, only using linked seams- a process where every joining stitch is linked together by hand. This eliminates any uncomfortable and unsightly ribbed seams. Care and attention to detail are of utmost importance. They use only the finest Derbyshire spring water for the wet finishing and dying process that gives them their super soft handle. Over 1 million stitches and over 35 hand finishing operations go into producing each piece. Local fanzine ProperMag is due in Schindler Shop later this week.

It has been running for over three years now and has gradually improved in both quality and content to the point where the next issue features 20 pages of full glossy colour, just like a real magazine!

This issue features the first exclusive interview with new brand tuk tuk which of course is available here at Schindler Shop.

There are also interviews with Kenneth MacKenzie from the cult band 6876, together with chats with the people behind Heritage Research and Univeral Works.

It's not just clothing chatter though. There's also a huge interview with legendary DJ Greg Wilson who has been busy of late after what seemed like a lifetime in exile. It's a proper eye opener and a must-read for anyone interested in music.

There's also the usual mix of light hearted messing about and informed gobbing off. You need this in your life.

Eastpak Clothing comes to Schindler

We've always been big fans of Eastpak here at Schindler Shop. We've stocked their bags for several seasons now and they've been a big hit. They tick the boxes we most like to tick. The brand itself has heritage. You know with Eastpak you're buying a long story not just a fashion trend.

That story wouldn't hold up though, if Eastpak didn't couple that heritage with good, well made stuff. Eastpak will reach it's half century next year having been set up in 1960 by Bradley John Harrison. Like many of the American brands with longevity, Eastpak once supplied the miltary although initially the brand was known as Eastern Canvas Products. After their success within the forces they decided to branch out into a more commercial market, with their bag quickly becoming the thing to have on campus during the 1970s.

Eastpak didn't get to it's 50th year without having a progressive outlook though, and it is this which propelled them into the millenium in the form of apparel and accessories to compliment their excellent bags. Having come under the wing of VF Corporation alongside brands like Wrangler and Jansport, Eastpak has come up with some excellent pieces of clothing, several of which we're pleased to offer you in store and online right now.

Boy done wrong now in stock

A new brand for us here at Schindler Shop is Boy Done Wrong. Inspired by the classic Italian menswear labels, Boy Done Wrong is UK based and sources all it's fabrics within the EU, which is also where their clothing is manufactured. This enables them to keep a strong grip on the whole process from design to production. The end product is exactly as it was meant.

We have a fair spread of their items from t-shirts and polo shirts and knitwear in the shape of cardigans and sweaters.

It's a relatively new brand so this is your chance to get onto it before your mates do.

The Real McKee - A Northern Soul

Occasionally we stop going on about the aceness of our clothing and switch your attention to other stuff we think is ace.

In this case we thought we'd bring your attention to a smashing Sheffield based artist, Pete McKee.

He's been around a while now and we thought it was good timing to feature him here on our blog because he's in the middle of exhibiting his work just down the road from us in Manchester.

The exhibition takes in three Manchester bars, Oddest, Odd and Odder. The artwork is on display until Thursday at Oddest on Wilbraham Road, but moves to a city centre location in the shape of Odd Bar on Thomas Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter. Then on 7th December Oxford Road's Odder bar (opposite the bbc, map fans) hosts the third installment, which continues until 14th January.

The choice of Manchester to exhibit his work is not a coincidence. McKee has recently put together a collection of Mancunian music inspired artwork, taking in the well documented tale of the famous 1976 Sex Pistols gig at the Lesser Free Trade Hall, Joy Division through to today's torch bearers Elbow and everything inbetween.

Aertex + Shirts = Well smart

Aertex is a brand which is in keeping with our appreciation of genuine heritage. The brand has existed for over 120 years in one way or another. Aertex was born out of Lancastrian mill owner Lewis Haslam's desire to create an innovative fabric which was versatile enough to keep the warmth in and the cold out, but also be breathable.

Like many brands which have stood the test of time, they played their part in the war effort, with the British Army sporting Aertex shirts and Jackets during World War 2.

With the war over and the country in recovery, the boom in youth fashion during the 1950's saw Aertex propelled to the forefront. Aertex featured in the Festival of Britain in 1951 and ended the decade making tentative steps into the UK sporting market with their support of the 'All New Netball Associations' coaching film.

That involvement in sports was a natural progression and was cemented during the 1960's with the advanced Aertex being utilised by various sports such as football, tennis and cricket. This naturally led to the brand becoming popular within school sports.

Aertex began the 1970's with their prestigious involvement with the England football team. With the World Cup taking place in the searing Mexican heat the likes of Bobby Moore sported Aertex made kits which allowed them to feel (and look) as cool as possible.

The use of Aertex fabrics in football continued throughout the 1980s with stars such as George Best wearing a shirt featuring Aertex technology when playing in the NASL for San Jose Earthquakes in 1981.

Today Aertex is firmly established as one of the UK's leading lights, with musicians and television personalities favouring Aertex clothing.

Having been with the seminal Duffer from 1984 until 1997, he has returned to his roots in designing clothing to be worn on the street. With distibution limited we consider it a privilege to be stocking Sharpeye.

Happy Kappa! - Robe di Kappa arrives at Schindler Shop

In keeping with our liking for brands with a bit of heritage we've just had a rather spiffing delivery of the very latest take on Robe di Kappa's classic polo shirts. Forget the slight dip the brand suffered a few years back. This is a name synonymous with cool on the football terraces and beyond.

Kappa was set up in 1916 in the historic Italian city of Turin, home to footballing giants Juventus. Robe di Kappa grew out of that in the 1960's as young men the world over took to wearing polo shirts as a fashion item rather than something to play racket sports in.

Unlike their contemporaries Fred Perry and Lacoste, Robe di Kappa enjoyed significant success away from the tennis courts and instead in football, with countless clubs choosing the Italian brand to manufacture their kits throughout the 1970s and particularly the 80s. The striking logo featuring the silhouette of a naked couple helped cement them in the minds of many and the brand made the short leap from the pitch to the terraces.

It's easy to confuse Robe di Kappa with the more downmarket stuff that was knocking about ten or so years ago. Don't make that mistake though. This is seriously ace stuff we're talking about here. Discreet apart from the Robe di Kappa logo on the chest and the same shape and quality as they have always been, these polo shirts are timeless. They'll never go out of fashion. You need to buy one before the sun decides it's time to pack up and disappear for another year.

New brands due in store and online

With the country in the grip of a rare heatwave, it may seem a strange time to be talking about the forthcoming Autumn/Winter stock we have due in store soon, but such is the nature of mens fashion!

Most shops take in their big jackets and their jumpers in July and August and we're no different. As usual with Schindler Shop we will be bringing you an impressive mix of old favourites and new kids on the block. And it's two of those new kids we're going to introduce to you right now.

First up is a brand which could rightly argue with our description of it as a new kid if we're being fair. Sharpeye is the brainchild of Barrie K. Sharpe. He was part of a duo behind the early 1990's music style of Groundbeat, an Acid / Jazz / Rare Groove offshoot that had its roots in the London area and old soul vinyl record shops. The act first came to the attention in the late 1980s, signing to London Records dance offshoot ffrr. They released singles such as The Masterpan, Love or Nothing and The Sun Worshippers as well as the album The Black, the White, The Yellow and The Brown.

In 1984 Sharpe created the now world renowned brand Duffer Of St George and designed all of its collection's until 1997. It was in 1997 that Sharpe launched the sucessful clothing brands Sharpeye and Suiceyed and now operates a handful of stores in the London area.
After slipping away from the ever growing commercial success of "Duffer", Barrie K. Sharpe decided to return to the original "Inna Citi" street ethos he had created. Barrie went to the crossroads and retraced his steps, holding "Sharpeye" steady and maintaining maximium credibility for his market.

Now sharpeye is ready to evolve and establish its rightful places in the main fashion arena.

While sharpeye have their roots on the street, Musto are a brand synonomous with the sea having been founded in 1965 by Keith Musto, a British Olympic Sailor and Engineer. Using his experience he created clothing aimed at technical excellence able to withstand the most extreme conditions, keeping the wearer warm, dry, comfortable and most importantly looking good.

Two brand new t-shirst have just been hand delivered to us by cult local brand Casual Connoisseur, just in time for the weekend.

A new take on the ever popular Subbuteo Casuals design features the three familiar figures, each featuring a mix of vintage and contemporary casual wear. This t-shirt is available in sky blue and charcoal and is sure to be a good seller, just like it's predecessors.

A brand new design from CasualCo features the classic childhood hero Action Man. Available in khaki (which goes with anything) and cream the design depicts a vintage Action Man, sporting old style mountaineering gear and proclaims 'Realistic Hair and Beard' and 'It's not the mountains we conquer but ourselves'. It's another example of Casual Connoisseurs innovative and original artwork.
